The Art of Honey Extraction

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net

The following links access you to some interesting video clippings taken by me from my household premises located at Ollukkara, Near Mannuthy, Thrissur. The beehives were collected from a big hollow 6 feet long  cavity developed on the trunk of an old Chempakam Tree (Magnolia Chempaka in botanical terminology). Shri Gopalakrishnan an ex-employee of the Kerala Agricultural University,  is an expert in this job and he is a bee-keeper and earns money from this profession .  Watch the videos.  The" then adas" are carefully taken out and safely fastened to specially designed "frames" and then racked in side wooden cabinets .  The  bits of thenadas having irregular shapes were hand squeezed and they yielded  for me about one kg of pure un-adulterated Honey.  Professional bee-keepers use Mechanical Centrifugal Extractors for separating honey from the "then ada" (where bees deposit and preserve the honey they collect) without damaging the then ada (with honeycommb cellular structure) and adas are re-usable for the bees.

Rubber plantation farms are learnt  to be ideal for bee-keeping with good honey yield, but big villa complexes having flower gardens (sorry, flat owners)  are also worth trying for bee-keeping  since bee-keeping gives enjoyment plus money, for those who are interested

Nandakumar
