One needs sheer will-power

Oxford or Cambridge By Mamta GETTING into Cambridge or Oxford universities is like a dream for many students. But, sometimes the sheer weight of the name makes it daunting. At times, lack of proper guidance restricts many from applying. Kripa Balachandran, grandchild of Thrissur residents, Prof MK Menon, and Cochin Devaswom Board president MCS Menon, went through a gamut of emotions as she tried and got into Cambridge for her under-graduate degree in chemical engineering."My first reaction was I cried," said Kripa, who grew up in Bahrain, as she got ready to pack her bags to fly to England. "I had worked really hard towards it and I was glad that it paid off. The school where I studied [St Christopher's School, Bahrain] worked as a catalyst. "Applying to Cambridge and Oxford is a bit more complicated than to the other universities in the UK. But all the information is available on the net. It's very transparent and the forms can be downloaded from www.UCAS.com."Oxford and Cambridge prefer students with academic potential. The cut-off percentage differs from board to board and they do make exceptions at their discretion. Those who apply to Cambridge cannot apply to Oxford and vice versa because invariably the students who get into Cambridge have the potential to get into Oxford also. "You apply as you finish grade 11. So you need a reference from your teacher predicting your expected grades and an academic related reference too. The interviews can be frightening because you know you are being questioned by the topmost people in that field globally. I had two interviews one was physics/chemistry related and the other, maths related. They make you feel comfortable. Ultimately, it's a test of your self-confidence and willingness to try."For my course [chemical engineering], I had to choose either general engineering or natural sciences in the first year. From the second year, we were taught chemical engineering in depth. "Each student is provided by an individual pastoral tutor from the college who takes care of their personal requirements, and an academic tutor who monitors the studies."I did not apply to the US universities because they have an entrance exam and their applications are complicated. I did not want to stretch myself. "At Cambridge, they have summer internships. So if you do well, then you get noticed by the top firms in the UK. But then it's up to you to go looking out for it," Kripa said.
